We are located in Turangi, New Zealand and are within walking distance of the world famous Tongariro River, which is noted for its winter spawning runs of wild Rainbow trout with an average weight of approximately 2kgs or 4.5lb. The Brown trout on average will be larger with quite a few exceeding 10 lbs.

Summer Fishing

Summer fishing is quite challenging, using lighter rods and smaller nymphs, fishing for resident fish is sometimes a test of one's skill and patience. Spotting the fish first and then making the correct cast.

The scenery on these backcountry streams is great and you may think that you are the only person in this world. Most can be access by 4x4 vehicle. For the angler that wants a real adventure a helicopter flight will get you in to the most remote rivers in our area.

Summer fishing is mainly nymph fishing using 5-7 wt rods & smaller nymphs size 12-14,where as the winter fishing is will require heavier rods e.g. 8-9 wt because of the much heavier nymphs that we use.

Winter Fishing

This area is world renown for the winter runs of Rainbow & Brown trout up the Tongariro River & other smaller streams. These trout are in top condition & test your skills when trying to land these fish.

It is estimated that 50,000 - 70,000 trout run up the Tongariro River every winter. When we have had rain & the river is clear, clients have some magic fly fishing.

With your guides knowing the hot spots it is possible to hook up to 10 fish in a morning.

Rainbows will run all year round but the main fishing is May - October.

Browns run earlier & take quite a long time to move through the rivers. They start in December with the opportunity to catch them on a dry fly. Once June & July come there will be good numbers up the rivers for the patient angler. These are very allusive Brown trout, which need a bit of local knowledge to help you catch them.

From September onwards the earlier Rainbow & Brown trout that have spawned will start to return to Lake Taupo. These trout will be caught on more natural patterns as they are starting to build up condition that has been lost while spawning. There is also very good lake fishing around stream mouths in the winter time both during the day & at night.

Lake Taupo Fishing

There can be good trout fishing around the shores of Lake Taupo in the summer time. Where the trout come into feed on the smelt that are spawning in the shallower water. This can be entertaining & frustrating, as you will see the trout aggressively feeding within two-rod lengths of you. There is also some good night fishing while the trout are smelting.

Small Taupo Fishing

We have two small lakes that fish very well over our summer period, December - March.

Both Browns & Rainbows over 10lb are caught every year. The cicada fishing can be excellent after Christmas. Ian has had days where he has landed more than one fish over 10lbs.

Night Fishing

A great opportunity to catch the big boys that come out to feed at night. This is when Ian & Andrew have caught most of their double figure trout, including Ian's 19lb brown!

There is an evening rise in the early summer & summer periods for the fisherman that enjoys some dry fly fishing.

Helicopter Fishing

For the angler that wants a real adventure to the most remote rivers, a helicopter flight is the way to go. These rivers hold good numbers both Rainbows & Brown trout, with fish over 7lb not uncommon. There are huts by the rivers, so it is possible to stay overnight.

For one angler & one guide a smaller machine will slightly cheaper.

Hunting

There is Red, Sika & Fellow deer in our Central Plateau & Lake Taupo area. The roar for deer hunting is from April- May. All of these deer are fear chase with no deer fences in sight. Our Guide has had over 30 years experience in this area, with numerous heads over 10 points & even a fellow with 20 points. There are also rabbits, opossums, goats & pig hunting can be arranged.
